You know that place where Julia Childs meets Rachel Ray? Yeah, I’m nowhere near that. But you have to start somewhere and I’m going to try to cook my way through 2009.
The goal: home-cooked meals at least 4 days a week. Preferably healthy, creative, quick, delicious home-cooked meals.
The raw material: I won’t say I’m a necessarily a bad cook — give me a simple recipe and I’ll follow directions like a pro. But, I’m certainly not confident – or creative. If left in the kitchen alone, I could probably only make a few things off the top of my head (the first of which would be grilled cheese). I don’t really cook meat… not because I don’t like it. It’s more that I have a fear of making people sick (more on that to come).
The other big factor that has held back my inner-chef is lack of time. I work full-time and commute 2 hours every day, so by the time I get home I’m usually not in the mood to spend hours (or even AN hour) in the kitchen.
I live in northern VA with my wonderful husband (Lee) who is already a much better cook then I’ll ever be. We’re taking this little project on together. Wish us luck.
In case you’re wondering, “Don’t drink after monkeys” stems from a piece of advice my husband gave his father a few years ago. I have never seen two people laugh as hard as they did during that random conversation, so I thought it represented our crazy, perfect little life quite well.
